On Your Campus

Zine Magubane is Associate Professor of Sociology at the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, Boston College.  Dr. Magubane will present the Robin M. Williams, Jr. Lecture at the 91st Annual Meeting (February 18-21, 2021) on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

"My work has dealt with two major geographic areas of the world, the United States and Southern Africa. My choice of research topics reflects a deliberate effort to make an innovative contribution in the following four sociological sub-fields: the sociology of knowledge, the sociology of culture, social stratification, and historical sociology. My purpose in choosing topics as disparate as masculinity and music and assembling data from geographical locales outside of the United States was to make a significant theoretical contribution by pursuing areas of inquiry that, although they speak to the major concerns of the discipline, have traditionally been neglected. My primary goal has been to pursue topics that sit at the intersection of all four areas. In this way I have been able to make contributions in several different areas precisely through showing how they exist in dynamic interaction."

The Robin M. Williams, Jr. Lecturer Host Committee invites institutions to apply to host Zine Magubane for the 2021-22 lecture series. The Eastern Sociological Society established the Lectureship in 1992 to honor the many contributions of Robin M. Williams, Jr. (1914-2006) to the discipline and the Society, particularly as founding editor of its journal, Sociological Forum.

ESS will provide transportation and honoraria: the host institution will take care of local arrangements, including room and board. The individual chosen for the Lectureship will receive an honorarium and will present two lectures on campuses in the ESS region during the terms of his or her appointment. All institutions are welcome to apply, but preference is given to public universities, especially community colleges.

To apply, simply send an email with the name of the institution, location, and contact person to Vice President José Itzigsohn at [email protected]
